One Foot from Disaster: Divine Protection and Christian Herbalism for Anxiety

Christian Herbalism for Anxiety and Stress: Lemon Balm, and Prayer

I want to share a very real, very recent experience of God’s protection during a sudden windstorm on our homestead, and how I leaned on both prayer and Christian herbalism for anxiety and stress afterward. In the story below, you’ll see how a near‑miss with a falling tree drove us to immediate thanksgiving, and how a simple herb, lemon balm, served as a gentle, God‑given support for a frazzled nervous system. If you’ve ever wondered how Christian herbalism can fit into a life of faith when anxiety, shock, and stress hit hard, this reflection is for you.

Last Tuesday afternoon, we had one of those freak windstorms roll through the property. The sky grew dark, the wind picked up out of nowhere, and you could almost feel the atmosphere warning you, “Get ready.” I went outside to do the usual scramble: get the pigs in, tuck the hens away, make sure everything that could blow away was as secure as I could make it.

As I moved through the yard, I heard that familiar sound, the sudden crack of a tree giving way. There was no time to think, to analyze, or even to decide. My body just moved as if someone else operated me like a doll. I ran towards the house, and truthfully, I still couldn’t tell you exactly how I covered that distance so fast. All I know is that when I stopped and turned around, a tree fell onto the ground behind me. It missed me by about a foot.

In that moment, all I could do was praise God. There was no question in my mind: my guardian angel had protected me. Of this I am sure.

When the storm passed, and we could finally look around, we realized we had lost three trees. Every single one fell in a way that narrowly missed both the house and the barn. If any of them had landed just a little differently, we would be telling a very different story right now. Instead, everyone. The humans, the home, and the animals all came through unscathed—except for a superficial scratch on my leg from a flying branch.

As the adrenaline wore off and the dust cleared, the reality hit me. My hands began to shake. My stomach spun. I was a little anxious. I had just come very close to death. And yet, by His grace, I was spared. We were spared.

So we did the only thing that made sense: we went into prayer. We thanked God for His mercy, for His protection, for the unseen care that surrounds us far more often than we notice. These are the moments when theology stops being theoretical and becomes very concrete. God really does “command His angels concerning you,” and sometimes you hear the crack of a tree and realize just how literally that can play out.

After prayer, when the storm ended and the crisis was over, I was still on edge. The body doesn’t just flip off the “fight or flight” switch because you’ve decided everything is now fine. My nervous system was still ramped up. So, along with prayer and rest, I picked up a simple helper: a couple of doses of lemon balm tincture to calm my jangled nerves.

Lemon Balm, Christian herbalism for anxiety and stress

Lemon balm: a gentle helper for a jangled nervous system

Lemon balm, Melissa officinalis, is one of those humble, gentle herbs that has been used for centuries to soothe anxiety, nervous tension, and stress. Traditional European and Mediterranean herbalists have long turned to lemon balm to ease restlessness, lift low mood, and promote a sense of calm.

In recent years, those old observations have been supported by modern research. Several clinical studies and reviews suggest that lemon balm extracts can reduce mild-to-moderate anxiety and may improve sleep quality in some people. In one small study, people with anxiety and sleep disturbances who took lemon balm for a couple of weeks reported less anxiety and better sleep compared to those on a placebo.

Lemon balm appears to support the nervous system in a few ways. Compounds in the plant, including rosmarinic acid and certain essential oils, seem to interact with GABA, one of the brain’s main calming neurotransmitters, helping to reduce excessive nervous excitation. In everyday language, it gently helps the “brakes” work a little better in a nervous system that’s stuck in overdrive.

Lemon Balm, Anxiety, and Nervous System Support

Practically, many people use lemon balm as:

  • A soothing tea in the evening to wind down from the day.
  • A tincture in acute moments of stress, nervousness, or emotional shock.
  • Part of a blend with other calming herbs like lavender, passionflower, or chamomile for support with sleep and tension.

Of course lemon balm is not a magic switch for serious anxiety. As part of a Christian, well-rounded approach that includes prayer, gratitude, rest, wise counsel and attention to lifestyle, lemon balm can be a beautiful, mild ally for the nervous system.

On that windy afternoon, I experienced the mercy of God in a very physical way; a tree fell where it didn’t have to, a body moving faster than it normally does, a family and a homestead spared. And afterward, in the calm, I experienced His mercy in a smaller way: through a simple plant that helped my body come down from the edge.

Dear friends, may we never take His protection for granted. And may we also receive, with thanksgiving, the gentle remedies He has planted in creation to help us recover when life shakes us to the core.

If you’ve had a similar “near miss” moment in your own life, what helped you come back to a place of calm? Was it prayer, an herb, a person, or something else God used to steady you?
